Smart home industry urged to make its mark in 2026 Census
The smart home technology sector is calling on integrators across Australia to help shape the future recognition of the industry by correctly identifying their occupation in the upcoming 2026 Census.
Ahead of Census night on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, industry body CEDIA is encouraging professionals working in smart home integration to list their occupation as “Smart Home Technology Integrator” rather than broader classifications such as electrician or AV technician.

The push forms part of CEDIA’s proposal to have Smart Home Technology Integrator recognised as an official occupation under the Australian Bureau of Statistics Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA).
The classification review, scheduled for 2027, will rely on industry data and workforce evidence to determine whether the role should receive its own recognised occupation code.
For the rapidly growing smart home sector, gaining official recognition could have significant implications from improving industry visibility and insurance classifications to supporting future skilled migration pathways and the rollout of an official apprenticeship program.
CEDIA says the Census provides one of the strongest opportunities for integrators to demonstrate the size and importance of the profession.
With smart home technologies becoming increasingly integrated into residential and commercial environments, spanning automation, lighting control, security, AV systems, energy management and connected devices, the industry says accurate workforce data is essential to ensuring the sector receives the recognition and support it requires.
For professionals completing the 2026 Census, the message from the industry is simple: The occupation box matters.
By identifying as a Smart Home Technology Integrator, Australian integrators can help build the case for formal recognition and ensure the future workforce reflects the reality of the industry today.
