Launch of top trends for 2011 and the decade ahead
The release includes an attractive visual map of the decade, descriptions of the 14 ‘ExaTrends’ of the decade, and the 11 themes that will define the Zeitgeist for 2011. Ross Dawson, the Australia-based chairman of Future Exploration Network, led the analysis performed by the organisation’s global team.
“The zeitgeist for the year ahead will be driven by the social and business impact of emerging technologies, combined with the anxieties of a rapidly shifting economy,” says Ross.
The Zeitgeist themes for 2011 include:

– Networked or Not? Our fundamental choice on whether to live a fully connected life.
– Everyone Naked. Wikileaks is just the beginning of naked government and business.
– Immersive Entertainment. 3D, motion sensors, augmented reality.. we can’t get enough.
– Social News Curation. The more news we share, the less we need the news headlines.
– Sensory Indulgence. Fine tastes and sensory luxury are now a basic expectation.
– Wrath of Crowds. Our voices are amplified to ravage reputations as never before.
– End of 9 to 5. Work transcends time resulting in no boundaries to personal life.
Each theme is accompanied by a full description of its implications for business and society.
The map also includes an analysis of the ‘ExaTrends’ of the decade. “MegaTrends were the subject of discussion decades ago,” says Dawson. “In a world in which the pace of change is exponential we need to upgrade the way we describe the most powerful trends.” Exa is the prefix meaning 10 to the power of 18, following Mega, Giga, Tera, and Peta.
“We are at the dawn of a new decade” notes Ross.
“We need to understand the deep underlying trends that will shape our lives. Vital issues include the rise of China, the development of a world in which we live or die by our reputation, and a soaring media economy in which newspapers die yet many other media forms explode to dominate our waking hours.”
The most recent forecast issued by Future Exploration Network and Ross Dawson, the Newspaper Extinction Timeline, was seen by over 2 million people and appeared in major publications in over 30 countries.
