Broadband Forum launches Matter Service API for faster smart home service development

The Broadband Forum has launched the Matter Service API, a standardised interface designed to give service providers and application developers a unified view of Matter-enabled devices across smart home networks, regardless of manufacturer.

The API aims to remove the need to develop separate services for individual Matter ecosystems, allowing providers to build solutions once and deploy them across compatible devices. Potential applications include diagnostics, automation, energy management and customer support.

The Matter Service API combines the Broadband Forum’s User Services Platform (USP/TR-369) with the Matter protocol through the MatterService Data Model for USP Enabled Devices (TR-517). The framework allows broadband gateways, routers and smart home hubs to act as platforms for managing connected devices and developing new services.

The model is designed to remain aligned with Matter’s evolving device definitions as new categories are added, including cameras, energy management devices, appliances, sensors and shading systems.
