ATEN International has unveiled a major update to its ATEN KX9980 5K DisplayPort Dual Display KVM over IP extender, introducing new technologies aimed at improving remote performance and security in mission-critical control room environments.

The upgraded KX9980 integrates USB 3.2 support for high-speed data transfers and introduces virtual machine (VM) support through KVM-based IT/OT network separation. The enhancements are designed to support sectors such as broadcasting, industrial control, network operations centres, energy, transportation, medical imaging and traffic management, where reliable remote system access is essential.

The addition of USB 3.2 enables users to access and control high-speed peripherals over an IP connection with near-local responsiveness, supporting data-intensive workflows and precision tasks while maintaining stable remote connectivity.

The KX9980 receiver also introduces VM support via hardware-based IT/OT network separation. The system incorporates a dedicated local PC console for mission-critical operations, allowing users to access both physical servers and virtualised environments while keeping operational technology infrastructure isolated for enhanced security and system integrity.

“As control rooms evolve toward more decentralised and virtualised environments, the need for fluid, secure integration has never been greater,” ATEN International senior vice president Nicholas Lin says.

“By delivering industry-first USB 3.2 for high-speed data transfers and industry-first VM support via KVM-based IT/OT network separation within our KX9980 KVM over IP extender, we empower organisations to bridge the gap between remote mastery and mission-critical support.”

The KX9980 supports 5K resolution at 60Hz with 12-bit deep colour and lossless compression, as well as high frame rate performance of up to 240Hz at 1080p or 144Hz at 1440p. Additional features include network and power redundancy for uptime protection, along with collaboration tools such as Panel Array Mode and video wall integration.
