Samsung Electronics Australia has announced its first Onyx Cinema LED screen in Australia. A 14m screen is now at the HOYTS Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, Sydney and a 10m screen to be installed in HOYTS Highpoint in March of this year.

Onyx Cinema LED technology transcends the traditional performance and visual experience of projector-based solutions which have been the standard for more than 100 years. This new Samsung offering now brings LEDs to the big screen for a more immersive and unbelievable experience.

“Through Samsung Onyx and our partnership with HOYTS, we are bringing the cinema of the future to Australia,” Samsung Electronics Australia director consumer electronics display division Phil Gaut says.

“As the film industry continues to evolve, we have developed new cinema LED technology that gives our entertainment partners an edge to enhance the movie-going experience for their customers. Onyx brings Samsung’s heritage in screen innovation to the cinema and delivers detail-rich picture quality and colour spectrums that maintain colour accuracy for a range of hues and brightness levels.

“We’re proud to partner with HOYTS to launch the next generation of cinema in Australia.”

The new screens bring deeper blacks and an impressive contrast ratio to the cinematic content on display. The two will also combine 4K resolution, HDR picture quality and a peak brightness level of 146 lumens, nearly 10 times greater than what a projector can offer.

With more than 50 entertainment locations Australia-wide, HOYTS is a natural home for the new Onyx Cinema LEDs and the Moore Park location will act as HOYTS’ flagship cinema destination.

“We’re always looking for new ways to stay ahead of the game and provide our guests with something unexpected,” HOYTS Group chief executive Damian Keogh says.

“That’s why we’re leading the way by incorporating Australia’s first Onyx Cinema LED screens into our cinemas. These screens are a total game-changer, providing a movie and entertainment experience unlike anything our guests have seen before.”
