Quantum Data announces new features for 780 Handheld Test Instrument

The 780 Handheld Test Instrument is a portable, full featured instrument for functional testing of HDMI source, sink, and repeater devices. Installers and developers can conduct confidence tests on the components in an HDMI system and diagnose interoperability problems related to hot plug, EDID, HDCP, and infoframes. In addition, the 780 provides the necessary video patterns—including 3D—and audio test tones for calibrating the video of HDTVs and the acoustics of a room.

The Frame Compare test is an enhancement to the existing Cable and Repeater Test option. Previous releases of the 780 enabled installers to test an HDMI cable or HDMI network comprised of devices such as repeaters, switches, extenders, etc. when both ends are collocated. However in many installations the source and sink ends of an HDMI system are not collocated because the distribution network is routed through walls. With the new Frame Compare test, installers can test an HDMI cable or distribution system at the far end (the display end). The feature works by capturing a frame of video from the source and then comparing this “reference frame,” pixel-by-pixel, to subsequent frames.

Decoding of the audio IEC headers is part of the Network Analyser option. This feature provides users with definitive information about the incoming audio such as the audio format, channels, sampling rate, and target bit rate. The 780 enables users to view the audio infoframes and channel status blocks as well.

Also included in the release are a suite of custom bitmap test images or “Image Packs” which can be purchased individually as options. The Image Packs support pattern testing using specific images. Additional image packs are anticipated over time.

The 780 Handheld Test Instrument combines a rich set of features for installers and developers with the convenience of portability at an attractive price.
