NuForce P-20 pre-amplifier
Volume controls invariably introduce noise and channel imbalance issues, and in response to this problem, NuForce designed the P-20 as a no-compromise solution. This NuForce Pre-Amplifier incorporates an accurate volume control technology, using a switched-resistor ladder network with the latest in thin-film technology.
With accuracy and a noise-floor that approaches the vanishing point, volume adjustment is achieved via a numerically controlled, switched-resistor ladder network, wherein a single thin-film, ultra-low-noise resistor is inserted in the signal path for each of the 99 discrete 0.5dB steps. The listener is also able to individually adjust any of the P-20’s input for precise level matching, thereby simplifying the matching of source-component volume levels.
The heart of the P-20 has an all-discrete, precise amplifier module, with reduced capacitive loading on the final voltage amp with the implementation of ultra-low-noise, monolithic dual JFETs, specially selected VMOS FETs, and flat hFE bipolar transistors in a dual cascade configuration, all of which are combined within a driven-shield arrangement.

The P-20 offers a 5MHz power bandwidth, a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 100dB, and a dynamic range in excess of 120dB. There are no capacitors or DC-servos in the inherently stable P-20’s gain circuit.
Precise, repeatable performance mandates thermal stability, so key amplifier modules are encapsulated by insulation and heavy copper shielding to avoid thermal drift. In addition, each employs self-contained shunt regulation in conjunction with a floating current-source supply for complete isolation from noise. Finally, all control functions are powered by a separate supply so that no switching noise ever contaminates low-level analogue signals.
