The National Association of Homebuilders Research Centre survey of 3,682 buyers found that although 7% of the survey respondents currently have central vacuum systems in their homes, 34% want central vacuums in their next home.

Other technologies on the list include wireless home security systems and security cameras that were listed by 50% and 40%, respectively, lighting control and wireless audio systems that were on the must-have list of 39% and home theatre systems, 37%. The two-part survey results were released in May 2013.

“The results clearly show that consumers want technologies that make their houses safer and healthier and with better access to information and entertainment,” says Brian Campbell, Brand and Trade Marketing Manager for BEAM Central Vacuum Systems.

“Our products play a significant role by removing 100% of contacted dirt and allergens from the living space, relieving allergy symptoms and improving air quality,” Campbell adds.

Campbell notes that as recently as 2000, only 2% of U.S. homes were equipped with central vacuum systems. However, penetration has more than tripled since then, particularly in luxury homes.

“The fact that more than one-third of recent and prospective buyers want central vacuums shows this these systems are becoming mainstream,” he said.
