Black Box Corporation CATx-based DisplayPort
The new MediaCento XD extenders, set to debut at InfoComm 2010 in Las Vegas, not only enable the economical extension of DisplayPort audio and video over ordinary UTP copper cable, the modular, signal-conversion devices also communicate with existing HDMI/DVI source equipment and display devices.
“This is what’s truly unique about them,” says Black Box digital signage product manager Keith Kazmer.
“Early adopters of DisplayPort interconnection technology can use the extenders without having to worry about how they’ll work with their existing HDMI and DVI ports. You can migrate to DisplayPort at your own pace as new technologies are introduced while maintaining support for existing digital video applications.”

The DisplayPort 1.1a compatible MediaCento XD transmitter can be plugged into a DisplayPort HD electronics device and, using ordinary CAT5e or CAT6 cabling, extend signals up to 182.8m to a MediaCento XD DisplayPort receiver or MediaCento XD HDMI/DVI receiver attached at a screen. The transmitter can also be ordered with HDMI/DVI input for use with existing digital AV players and other source equipment.
Because the MediaCento XD transmitters and receivers feature locking DisplayPort audio/video and power connectors, they are particularly ideal for use in areas at risk for accidental or intentional unplugging of display equipment.
“Often, displays are located within reach and wandering or curious fingers can lead to blank screens. The secure Black Box DisplayPort technology provides a much more secure connectivity solution,” Keith explains.
“Plus, they’re VESA screen mountable and great for applications with excessive equipment vibration, such as underground railway stations, parking garages and factory floors.”
The MediaCento XD extenders complement Black Box’s existing digital signage distribution lines, including MediaCento RF for extending HD content over existing coax cabling and MediaCento IP for distributing content over LANs and other IP networks, as well as HD view extenders for distributing video and audio affordably over dedicated copper wiring.
