Better quality TV for Wonga Beach with new digital transmitter
“The new transmitter, to be switched on by broadcasters is the final piece of infrastructure required to support the Gillard Government’s digital switchover in regional Queensland on 6 December,” says Senator Conroy.
“The new transmitter will improve the reliability and quality of television services to the area now and after the switchover.
“The digital switchover is permanently reshaping the television landscape in Australia and comprehensively addressing – in a very real way – many of the issues Australians have faced for many years with terrestrial free-to-air broadcasting.

“A key objective of the Gillard Government’s digital switchover is to close the gap that exists for so many and ensure all Australians can access the full suite of digital televisions services regardless of where they live.
“The Gillard Government has worked closely with commercial broadcasters to facilitate the rollout of the required infrastructure in regional areas to improve the availability of digital services to residents and the Wonga Beach transmitter is one important piece in this puzzle.
“I wish to thank commercial broadcasters for their ongoing cooperation with the Government’s switchover program and for investing in this infrastructure to bring equal TV services to viewers in regional and rural Australia.
“Together, the Gillard Government and Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters are bringing an end to the digital television division and ensuring all Australians, no matter where they live, have access to the same number of free-to-air television channels.”
The transmitter will be located at the Telstra exchange at Wonga Beach.
Senator Conroy says it was important residents realised they may need to take steps to ensure they have the right antenna set up and are pointing their antenna in the right direction.
“For some households mast head amplifiers should be removed as they may interfere with the signal from Wonga Beach causing set-top boxes and TVs to malfunction. Set-top boxes and TVs will need to be retuned in order to pick up the new local signal,” Senator Conroy says.
