Audio Design Experts Inc. (ADX™), the parent company of lifestyle brand RIVA Audio, has announced the issuance of a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) for its Trillium sound system processor that creates a broad sound field from a compact multi-speaker.

The patent for invention #9,197,963 B1 covers Trillium, the innovative audio technology that separates RIVA’s Turbo X and S premium mobile speakers from other products in the wireless category. The proprietary process up-mixes the left-right stereo signal and outputs it through three channels of amplification and seven transducers to create a stereophonic image that sounds much larger than the actual speaker size would indicate. The sound system processor creates a broad sound field by directing the appropriate signals to the three active speakers placed on the left, centre and right side of the cabinet. The output of these three speakers allows the sound to mix in-air to create virtual left and right speakers outside the enclosure, giving the user a more natural presentation.

The processor further augments the low frequencies of the speaker with signals for four passive radiators: two located on the front and two on the back, which offer additional depth and impact to the music. The symmetrical arrangement balances the speaker’s vibrational forces to prevent the resonances that might colour the sound, while also preventing unwanted speaker movement.  And thanks to the unique Trillium processor, the RIVA Turbo X and RIVA S speakers do not exhibit off-axis comb filtering, thus providing a wider listening area with smooth, crystal clear sound, even at high output levels.

“Trillium is an example of RIVA’s imagination and innovation to revolutionise the wireless speaker market and challenge the preconceived notions of what a Bluetooth speaker can be.” said president and chief engineer of RIVA Audio Donald North. “More than just small, portable boxes, RIVA’s speakers are made to truly expand the musical sound field and provide the user with a more natural listening experience.”
