Sony has expanded its Cinema Line with the launch of the FX5, a full-frame cinema camera that combines advanced imaging technology, high-frame-rate recording and professional workflow features in a compact, portable body.

Designed for cinematographers and content creators, the FX5 features a newly developed fully stacked CMOS image sensor, delivering more than 15 stops of dynamic range, Dual Gain Shooting mode and three base ISO settings to improve low-light performance and image quality.

The FX5 also becomes the first camera in Sony’s Cinema Line FX Series to support Open Gate shooting and in-camera X-OCN recording, Sony’s proprietary RAW recording format.

The camera can record 5K video at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps and Full HD at up to 240fps, giving filmmakers greater flexibility for high-resolution and slow-motion production.

Sony has also introduced two optional accessories alongside the FX5, including a detachable OLED viewfinder and an XLR Handle that enables in-camera audio recording at up to 96kHz, 32-bit float.

Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who has worked on films including Top Gun: Maverick and F1 The Movie, says the camera impressed during testing: “I felt that FX5 is a camera that combines high-quality image expression and mobility in a compact body, enabling people to use it across a wide range of shooting environments.”

Film director Gareth Edwards, whose credits include The Creator, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Jurassic World: Rebirth, also tested the camera while filming across Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal: “Guerrilla filmmaking just went to the next level, the FX5 is the run-and-gun cinema camera to beat.”
