Why do I need a projection screen?

Screens are specifically designed to reflect light a certain way to optimise picture quality. They are made from special material that greatly enhances the picture quality by maintaining proper colour levels and brightness. Although walls and sheets will work, a screen will always give you the optimal results.

There are different types of materials that are made to suit different types of projectors (LCD, DLP, etc) and the characteristics of the room it will be in, such as if lighting can be controlled or not. Most screens are also made to have a perfectly flat surface and ensure that the image is the same for everyone viewing it. The bottom line is, you don’t need a screen, but contrast, brightness and colour accuracy can all benefit from a proper screen surface.
