Revolv’s smart home solution built around FlashLink technology

In the past few years, a handful of affordable technologies have entered the market and have gained traction among home owners – Sonos, Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, etc. For the most part, these technologies have helped to educate end users about the possibilities presented by a truly connected home.

Now, a new system called Revolv plans to bring all of these devices together in one entry level, consumer-friendly system – the Revolv Smart Home Solution, which unifies off-the-shelf devices in one simple smart phone app.

“The connected home market is growing rapidly but is becoming more complicated for consumers to manage as they add connected home devices and more and more apps to control them,” Revolv co-founder Mike Soucie says.

The new system automates daily life routines around time, GPS proximity, sensor triggers such as motion in the home, and on-demand commands set by the user. Its proprietary GeoSense technology automatically activates connected devices when the user reaches a certain geo-radius to and from their home.

“Revolv’s vision is to create the ‘conscious home’, in which your home is in tune with your daily habits and routines and can easily automate your home environment around your lifestyle (while also saving energy, providing insight and notifying you of potential concerns).

“To achieve this, the company has built a future-proof solution that will keep up with technology advancements in the smart home market. Our technology includes an unprecedented seven radios (only three of which are currently active) that speak 10 different wireless languages to support the best connected home devices now and in the future.

“In fact, we built our whole business on the premise that different wireless technologies exist for different purposes and there needs to be a single solution that can unify them to seamlessly work together. Range, security mechanisms, power consumption, mesh networking, etc, are all considerations that manufactures have to weigh when determining the best embedded wireless technology for their connected devices. Our premise is that regardless of the technology used in the connected devices, Revolv eliminates the complexity for the average smart home owner who doesn’t want to be the tech expert.”

Revolv uses both cloud and local intelligence stored on the hub, which makes the system more responsive than other cloud-based only solutions. It doesn’t require an Ethernet cable — users simply plug the hub into any centrally located outlet in their home and its ‘FlashLink’ technology securely connects to a home’s Wi-Fi network almost instantly, making it simple to setup. Once connected, the hub and app work together to automatically discover many wireless devices already installed in the home. Other devices are easily added with a simple plug and play or push button discovery.

“Revolv prides itself on its simple setup. FlashLink is our proprietary method to get your Revolv hub joined to your local Wi-Fi network in less than 60 seconds. Using the flash from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you’ll be able to transfer your Wi-Fi information optically directly to the hub, eliminating the need for networking knowledge or know-how.”

Revolv currently supports over 50 devices from a dozen manufactures with its three currently active radios (WiFi, Z-Wave and Insteon). This number will increase to about 200 devices once the ZigBee radio becomes active via a firmware update in 2014.

“In the future, when all three radios are active, Revolv will be able to support 95% of the best and most reliable devices, made by the most popular brands, covering over 25 connected home device categories,” Mike says.

Revolv started shipping in the US in November 2013. International availability is yet to be announced.
