Valens Semiconductor introduces VS020 chipset based on HDBaseT technology
Valens Semiconductor, the inventor of HDBaseT technology, has unveiled the new VS020 chipset, a digital connectivity solution for the CCTV market that enables unprecedented long-distance distribution of multimedia content to cameras and displays via a single Category 5e/6a LAN cable.
The CCTV industry is busy transitioning from analogue to digital, and equipment manufacturers and installers need options that meet the demand for high quality video while also reducing installation cost and complexity.
“Currently, most CCTV systems are analogue but the transition to digital is underway and inevitable; however, IP camera solutions have some limitations that complicate this transition,” Valens Semiconductor vice president of marketing and business development Micha Risling says.

“The price of a network camera remains considerably higher than the price of an equivalent analogue camera. IP cameras also present installation challenges since they require advanced IT knowledge.
“Given the demand for high quality video, a solution with limited bandwidth is not an option. Equipment manufacturers and installers need a way to meet the demand for high quality video, while also reducing installation cost and complexity. Leveraging the success of HDBaseT technology, Valens developed the VS020 chipset to address the specific needs for the CCTV market to provide a fast, simple and cost effective connectivity technology for the transition to digital CCTV.”
The VS020 product family consists of two chipsets, the VS020Tx transmitter designed for HD camera equipment and the VS020Rx receiver designed for digital video recorders (DVRs), monitors and other display equipment.
Based on HDBaseT technology, the VS020 chipset combines uncompressed HD video, audio, power and control signals via a single, standard 150m Cat 5e/6a cable. By supporting uncompressed video, the VS020 chipset ensures no latency, allowing live monitoring and advanced video analytics. It also supports Power over HDBaseT (PoH) and Power over Ethernet (PoE), providing a true single cable option.
Further addressing the market’s cost and complexity challenges, the VS020 product family uses existing local area network (LAN) infrastructure, which ensures installation is simple, costeffective and scalable. Installers can quickly implement VS020 products using just one cable, requiring no additional training or field experience.
“The HDBaseT protocol was modified to accommodate specific CCTV requirements such as support for longer distances (150m),” Micha says.
“By supporting uncompressed video, the VS020 chipset ensures no latency, allowing live monitoring and advanced video analytics.
“We recognised CCTV installers’ needs and created a chipset optimised specifically for their unique requirements. VS020 is the first Valens chipset designed for CCTV solutions and Valens has defined a long-term roadmap for this industry. We are committed to this market and will continue to introduce next generation chips with enriched functionality.”
Products featuring the VS020 chipset are expected to be available shortly.
