This modern, sculptural subwoofer took the Silver Award for Product Design in the TV, Video and Audio Equipment category. The IDA recognises and promotes the world’s most visionary designers and uncovers emerging talent in architecture, interior, product, graphic and fashion design.

It was a formidable challenge to our design team, and to raw physics, to create a thin form factor subwoofer that is capable of reproducing a theatre-grade experience. The success of this product in the luxury marketplace and this IDA award serve as a stamp of affirmation for our designers and craftsmen.”

At only 4.5-inches deep, Leon’s Aaros A10-UT can be converted to a forward-firing or down-firing position and easily placed in any room. With a solid aluminum baffle and a highly specialised driver, it also offers more tonal balance than traditional large subs. To demonstrate the possibilities for customisation, one of the subwoofers featured on the IDA website includes a black leather-wrapped baffle in a cabinet constructed out of solid African Wenge hardwood. Other custom options include a zebra wood cabinet and a brushed aluminum baffle.

To date, designers from over 76 countries (on six continents) have submitted their work for IDA consideration. A panel of esteemed jurors including, Josh Rubin (founder, Cool Hunting), Hans Fonk (editor-in-chief, OBJEKT International) and Lise Coirier (editor-in-chief, TL), Aaron Kenedi (editor-in-chief, print), William Menking (editor-in-chief, The Architect’s Newspaper), and Alice Blackwood (editor-in-chief, Design Quarterly), among others, were responsible for choosing the 2011 IDA Winners.
